Students and online shopping: video insights

Students love online shopping and they are very good at it.

They use the internet not just to buy but also to research the ideal products for them.

Finding the best deal brings social kudos and saves budget.

Whether a student wants to compare car insurance, find the cheapest text books or buy designer labels, they will often turn to friends for their views on the neat tools and useful sites to use.

This is a young generation of digital natives newly arriving in the grown up world. They have a lot of stuff to buy and a lot of purchasing decisions to make.

So it’s no surprise that they use the same techniques honed writing essays and finding downloads to source the cheapest deals.

In a recent street voxpop we commissioned from MTV’s Tom Thurlow, students talked enthusiastically about their online shopping habits.

“All our Christmas shopping this year has been online,” laugh two female students out in Cheltenham. “We get everything we need online and we comparison shop online.”

”What are you even doing on the high street today girls?” asked Tom.

“Trying on dresses,” replied one, suggesting they will also check out items in the shops before returning home to buy them cheaper online.

One young man says he spends most on iTunes and Amazon. Other sites that students namechecked include TopShop, New Look, ASOS and JD Sports

But it’s quite clear they’ll go online to buy anything and everything from all varieties of internet store.
