iPhone: 84% of students not that bothered

Now we are clear of iPhone 3G launch frenzy, and the early-adopters have settled in with their devices, I thought I’d gauge enthusiasm for the iPhone 3G among UK students.

So I ran an online poll, questioning 1,000 students from the ten biggest universities.

I asked:

The new iPhone?
a) Already have one
b) Intend to get one in the next six months
c) No plans to get one right now

The answers are shown below, with 84% saying they have no plans to get one.

I was quite surprised by the results.

It seems that, for most young people, the new iPhone is not going to be among the £6,000 worth of kit that they take to university this year.

Do these results surprise you?

Post your thoughts.

  1. Interesting findings. How did you get the 1,000 responses? It would be interesting to see what people said next year…with iPhone and Omnia (and other similar devices) being more mainstream.

  2. Hi Chris :-)

I simply ran polls through Facebook, setting up by uni and taking 100 responses from each.

Other devices will make things interesting. Just been reading about the Google Phone, which should also shake things up a bit too: http://uk.techcrunch.com/2008/09/23/googles-g1-android-handset-to-be-free-in-uk-look-out-iphone/

  3. WOW! That seriously surprises me. I’ve been considering creating an iPhone app for my site, but this kinda changes things. Agree with Chris. Will be interesting to see how Google phone does. BTW – Just found it, but I love this blog!

  4. A year on….have you done the same research again Luke? iPhone is getting smarter….now with the 3GS….faster, with video camera and (most interestingly) with built in compass. Surely the iPhone is being taken up more by students whose contracts they had last year came to an end in 2009.

  5. Haven’t done any research Chris, but on an observational level – probably like you – I have seen iPhone take-up increase significantly with students and youth and I would expect quite different results this time round. We are expecting to do lots more research this year in collaboration with a specialist research firm, so I will see if I can get this qualified.

I would run one of those handy Facebook polls again, but sadly they stopped offering them.
